Traveling History

Since the mid-part of the twentieth century, motor homes have been an important part of the American culture scene during the summer. Baby boomers after the war hooked them up and took off to explore the nation’s national parks and scenic by-ways while taking the amenities of home with them. Camping was never easier, and parks sprang up everywhere where these vehicles could pull in and stay for a relaxing evening after driving all day.

In the past, you had the primary option of hooking your motor home to the back of your car, but now you can choose from models of varying sizes to drive yourself without the need for a separate vehicle. They come from a smaller, single bed unit to one that has side extensions, ample room, and several nice features. The versatility of these vehicles will change even more in the future as technology advances and new forms of alternative fuel are used to power these portable homes.

Many people of retirement age have found these to be great vehicles to travel with during the different seasons of the year. “Snow birds,” as they are often called, can use these to stay in the warmer parts of the country when winter comes to call. Their ease of use of online games and the ready availability of trailer parks or trailer equipped campgrounds make taking them anywhere easy.

The Air Streamer was the most common model to see on the highways with its sleek, silver bullet shaped body that has continued to this day to be popular. There are clubs that travel across the United States in rebuilt or renovated Air Streamers as a group, and it is fascinating to watch the long line of silver bullets fly down the highway past you. The motor homes from then to now have changed dramatically, both in appearance and technology – but the mainstay of cross country travel is still the primary motivation in taking home with you on the road.
